5:01 Country Rock at its Finest! |
Mark Wells sings and plays rhythm guitar in 5:01. He grew up in Australia and moved to New Zealand in his mid twenties. He was active in the Christchurch (N.Z.) folk music scene, both as a solo performer and as one quarter of an a capella group that sang a mix of traditional folk, barber shop, and jazz tunes.
Mark moved to Seattle in 1991, then spent the next 11 years trying to find a way to move to Vashon, which he did in 2002 with his wife and then four year old son. The wealth of great musicians on the Island inspired Mark to once again get serious about playing music, and after sitting in with Bob’s Your Uncle for a few months, met Doug Ringer, and along with Rochelle Wolfe, formed 501.
Mark still plays the occasional solo gig on island, but prefers the fuller sound and camaraderie of the band.
Rochelle Wolfe plays banjo for 5:01. Her styles include traditional bluegrass, frailing, and progressive backup. Wolfe has played the banjo for over 30 years, starting when she was a youngster growing up on Vashon. In 1999, Rochelle joined the teaching staff at Chatauqua Elementary where she was hired as the Physical Education Specialist. Partnering up with colleague and guitarist Ken Larson, both educators began to play impromptu concerts for the students at the school. Other Island educators joined Wolfe and Larsen to form the band “Bob’s Your Uncle,” which plays regularly on Vashon.
In 2003, Rochelle met Mark Wells and Doug Ringer and formed 5:01 as banjo player and harmony vocalist. Rochelle admits to being a “closet” banjo player for most of her life and is now enjoying playing in bands in front of audiences. She enjoys the rhythm and fullness that the banjo adds to 501’s sound.
Luke McQuillin is the lead guitar player for 5:01. With this band, he really shines with his awesome guitar solos and tasteful color notes and chords. Luke was playing guitar back when Jimmy Hendrix was still with The Isley Brothers (he actually opened up for The Isley Brothers when Jimmy was playing with them). He has been playing professionally off-and-on for more than 30 years. His roots are in rock-n-roll, rockin’ country, R & B & Jazz. Eric Clapton is his all-time favorite guitar player with his melodic style and sweet singing tones. However, Luke's "noodlings" have gotten him in trouble more than once and likes to think that he has everything in common with Eric (Hey! We all have fantasies, ya know!). He prefers to think of himself as a part of a horn section playing lines behind the melody.
He has appeared with such luminaries as Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, Emmy Lou Harris, Catfish Hodge, Allman Brothers, and others. He has lived on Vashon for the past 5 years and appears in various bands and venues on-island.
Doug Ringer plays bass guitar and sings for 5:01. He is relatively new to the musical scene, holding down the beat & driving 501s' bottom-end. In addition to 501, Doug plays with The Great Divide, Turner Down!, & on various occasions with other island bands when a bass player is needed. Recently he sat in with Michele Shocked.
Geordan Mitchellplays drums and various percusive sounds that always surprises everyone. He's been playing a longtime and his skill at playing country rock is exceptional!
